The instruction manual is very blunt in saying that it might be dangerous to use any other brand but really, don’t all Nickel Metal-Hydride chargers and batterries operate according to the same principles? Is Sanyo just trying to scare me in buying only their product or is there actually some risk there? Any info would be great thanks.

it depends on the type
I do on mine
We live in a world of left leaning attorneys looking for deep pockets. That is just an attempt (not just for Sanyo) to cover their “tush” if some other brand battery “blowes up” in their charger for what ever the reason.
Nicads have come a long way over the last 2 decades and NMH cells are a vast improvement both in amp-hr rating and shelf-life. But a battery is a battery and Generally speaking, the label on the case doesn’t mean a heck of a lot due there aren’t that many manufacturers. Most all of them “Private Label” or “House brand” for all the other “battery brands” Like KODAK (not fair to tell you who makes them) for example. Just use common sence, don’t try to “charge” carbon zink or alkaline batteries – EVER, Unless you darn straight know what you are doing. I have been a Sanyo and Panasonic battery user and supplier ever since the early days of cordless phones.
