19th December 2011 Cat: Rechargeable Battery Charger with No Comments »

i purchased an ordinary battery charger for just ordinary household batteries (aa &aaa) the salesperson told me i had to use the same brand batteries as the charger. i was told there was a chance the batteries would explode. i find this hard to believe as i think all Rechargeable batteries are made from the same materials. i would like some input on this.

You do not need to use the same BRAND of batteries, but you do need to use same TYPE of batteries. NiMH and NiCD are the most common types of rechargeable batteries in use today. Your charger may or may not charge both types. Mine has a selector switch to go between the two types. You can not mix them either. Charge only one type at the time. Life is easier if you use just one type and today NIMH is the battery of choice as they will last longer between charges. LI-ion batteries are another rechargeable but are not as common as the others and they require a their own type of charger. And yes they will explode if charged incorrectly.
