I realize that I’ll go through quite a few batteries but I’m looking at it solely as something that I would use in an extended power outage. Ideally, I would prefer a regular portable player with rechargeable batteries and get an external charger that takes regular, disposable batteries. Also, 7″ inch screen or better.

You should be able to find a portable DVD player that uses rechargeable batteries. You should not try to recharge regular batteries. Their not designed to be recharged and the chemistry doesn’t support it. You will waste your money and cause a possible fire hazard trying to recharge a regular battery.
